The Dundee/Memorial Park community is a popular area in central Omaha located near both Memorial Park and Elmwood Park. Homes have distinctive styles, the tree-lined streets, and cast iron street lights are a welcoming environment for people of many demographics. With a vibrant, retail center, the recreational activities available in the near-by parks, and its proximity to excellent private and public schools, the area is especially attractive to families.
That was not always the case. Known as Omaha’s first suburb, Dundee’s development began with four homes in the 1880’s. It took several developers, the planting of over 2,000 maple trees, an offer of free lots, expansion of the development area, and the marketing of the self-contained village concept to jump-start the community. By 1915, the area had over 2,500 residents and numerous Colonial, Georgian, and Tudor Revival style homes and was annexed as part of the city of Omaha.
The site now named Memorial Park was at one time a Dundee golf course. In the late 1940’s several Omahans promoted the idea of honoring all Douglas County individuals who had served our country in the armed services. They quickly raised funds, purchased the golf course and constructed the impressive memorial at the top of the hill. Dedicated in 1948, it is today the site of patriotic and recreational activities, most notably a popular concert and fireworks display to celebrate the 4th of July. With its immense green space and rolling hills, Memorial Park is a great place for neighborhood kids to play soccer, frisbee and go sledding.
Today’s residents take pride in the area’s history and friendliness. They continue many traditions—neighborhood 4th of July parades, Dundee Days, and street island gardens tended by volunteers and the City of Omaha.
